    Esther Jane Williams (August 8, 1922 - June 6, 2013) was a United States competitive swimmer and 1940s and 1950s movie star.

    Known as "America's Mermaid," she was famous for her musical films that featured elaborate performances with swimming, diving and "water ballet," which is now known as synchronized swimming.

    A teenager when she did her first film, she was a three-time national swim champion who qualified for three events in the 1940 Olympics that would end up being canceled because of World War II.

    For more than a decade during Hollywood's Golden Age Williams was one of MGM's most bankable leading ladies. Bathing Beauty was Hollywood's first swimming movie, and it created a new genre that would be called aqua musical.
